Over the past month, the team at Morris Digitalworks has been pushing hard to give the Drupal SMS project its much desired makeover.
The team has been working hard during a 6-week development cycle to build the system in Drupal v6.10 as well as, develop the SMS-based standard theme which, will be the base theme for all of the newspapers that the team plans to implement the system for to use to build sub-themes with.
The Site Management System (SMS) is a Drupal build containing a collection of modules, content types, themes, and system presets to allow stronger management of sites, such as newspaper sites, to manage the large amount of content that is produced.
The system also allows these types of sites to introduce more social and community-based content by allowing users to contribute blogs, create profiles and meet other users in a manner similar to that of larger social networks such as Facebook. The system will also allow more interaction with microblog systems like Twitter and other social system in the future, to help newspapers and the like to let their newsrooms take advantage of the new opportunities and outlets that the internet provides as the in-print world takes this massive hit from economic woes and paradigms shifts in information and technology.
After the main development cycle and a thorough testing period, the SMS system will be placed in full gear as up to 11 major newspapers around the country will implement and serve their internet needs by the end of this year.

The new themes are great. I can't wait to see how it actually implements out. I can't wait to scrap everything we've done to be able to do it more along the lines of the "drupal" way.
